The Source of Good Qualities

By Lama Tsong Khapa.

Translated by Ngawang Khenrab, Instituto Loseling de México´s resident teacher.

The foundation of all good qualities is the kind Guru.
Proper devotion to him is the root of the path.
Having perceived this, may I be inspired to rely on him
With strenuous effort and great reverences.

The precious life of leisure found but once,
Is extremely difficult to find and very meaningful.
Having realized this, may I be inspired unceasingly
To generate the awareness that takes the essence
Every day and night.

Remember that, at death, life and body will perish
Very quickly, like a bubble of water. After death,
The effects of white and black karma will follow you
Like a body and its shadow. Having found firm certainty
In this, may I be inspired to be always active in
Accumulating the collection of virtue and abandon
the Collection of the slightest and most minor faults.

There is no satisfaction in enjoying Samsaric pleasures;
That is the door of all misery and there is no reliability.
Having realized the defects of this, may I be inspired to
Generate a great aspiration to attain the bliss of Nirvana.

By the force of conscientious awareness and
Mindfulness, which are induced by pure thought,
May I be inspired to extract the essence, the vow of
Individual liberation, which is the root of Dharma.

Just as I have fallen into the ocean of Samsara, so have
All mother sentient beings. Having perceived this, may I be
Inspired to train in Bodhichitta that takes the burden to
Liberate all migrators.

Generating Bodhichitta alone is not sufficient to achieve
Enlightenment if I do not become acquainted with the three
Moral conducts. Having perceived this perfectly, may I be inspired to
Train in the Bodhisattva vow with strenuous effort.

May I be inspired to generate quickly a path in my mind-stream
That is a union of calm abiding and special insight, and
Which properly analyses the correct meaning and
Stills the distraction on wrong objects.

When I have trained in the common path and
Become a suitable vessel to practice, may I be
Inspired to enter easily a port for the fortunates,
Which is the Vajra vehicle, the highest of all vehicles.

The pure commitments and vows are said to be the
Basis of the two accomplishments to be achieved.
Having found uncontrived certainty in this, may
I be Inspired to keep them even at the cost of my life.

Thus, inspire me to practice dilligently, without being idle,
The four great sessions of yoga, as holy beings taught
Under the influence of having realized properly the pivotal point
Of the very essence of the two Tantric stages.

May such spiritual mentors who show the sacred path,
And spiritual friends who scrupulously practice them
Be blessed to have a long life and thoroughly pacify
All the collection of external and internal obstacles.

In all my rebirths, may I never be separated from
The perfect guru, enjoy the magnificience of Dharma and
Complete the qualities of the bhumis and the paths.
May I quickly achieve the state of Vajradhara.
